Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 2) – The Health Department reported 2,218 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the Philippines’ lowest daily increase since July 29.
The country’s case count is now 226,440, of which 64,207 are active cases or currently ill patients, according to department data.
Metro Manila still recorded the highest number of new infections with 1,163, followed by Laguna with 112, Cebu with 107, Iloilo with 82 and Negros Occidental with 81.
DOH also confirmed another 609 survivors and 27 deaths in its latest bulletin. These brought total recoveries to 158,610 and deaths to 3,623.
Twenty-five of the recently reported deaths occurred in August, while two in May and June, the DOH said.
It added that 42 duplicates were removed from the national case count as part of its cleanup and validation process, while one case previously reported as recovery turned out to be a death.
The OCTA research team from the University of the Philippines projected that cases in the county could rise to 375,000 by the end of September, while the virus’s reproduction rate is projected to decline further. For Metro Manila alone, he said total infections could range between 180,000 and 215,000 by the end of September.
Ten more Filipinos abroad also contracted the virus, while two more died, according to the Department of Foreign Relations. There are now 10,096 cases among Filipinos abroad in 74 countries, including 757 deaths and 6,177 recoveries.
Globally, about 857,000 people have died from COVID-19 out of more than 25.7 million infected people, according to the tracker maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
