Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has announced that his country is developing a second vaccine for the 2019 coronavirus disease (Covid-19) that is expected to be ready this month.
In a television interview on August 27, the transcript of which was shared by the Russian Embassy in the Philippines, Putin attested to the safety of the vaccine.
“In September, we should have another vaccine,” he said. “The second drug, as I have been informed, will be ready in September. I am sure that Vektor specialists will produce an excellent drug that will help people a lot, ”Putin said.
He said the vaccine developed by the Vektor Institute in Novosibirsk “went through preclinical and clinical trials and was tested on animals and volunteers.”
Russia is in the process of conducting more clinical trials of the first vaccine for Covid-19, called Sputnik V, which was developed by the Gamaleya Institute.
“Our specialists are absolutely confident today that this vaccine creates long-lasting immunity and people get antibodies, as was the case with my daughter,” Putin said.
“This vaccine is also harmless. Thank God my daughter feels good, “he added.
“We did everything necessary to register the vaccine, but with an asterisk, as we say. This means that this vaccine will have to undergo further research as part of a mass vaccination campaign, ”Putin said.
“We act in strict compliance with Russian law, and Russian law is consistent with international practices and regulations that apply in other countries.”
When asked if Sputnik V and the unnamed second vaccine will complement each other, Putin said: “I think they will most likely compete, because they should not be inferior to each other in terms of safety and efficacy.”
