JUSTICE Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Tuesday endorsed the appointment of retired director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Dante Gierran as president of the Philippines Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), saying he is the right man. to clean up the corruption agency.
Guevarra, who heads the PhilHealth Task Force investigating alleged multi-billion dollar corruption activities at PhilHealth, said Gierran’s stint with the NBI has prepared him for the job.
Gierran served as director of the NBI from his appointment in 2016 until he reached the mandatory retirement age of 65 in February.
He was replaced by Eric Distor, who was appointed the officer in charge of the NBI.
“The former head of NBI Gierran’s legal and accounting experience, renowned investigative skills, administrative skills, and fiscal prudence make him fit for the PhilHealth senior position and well prepared him to continue the cleanup and reform process at PhilHealth to completion. logic, ”Guevarra said.
Task Force PhilHealth is focusing its investigation on so-called fraud centers at the agency.
These include the agency’s Information Technology system, the Legal Sector, the Interim Reimbursement Mechanism (IRM), and lastly, financial management.
Deputy Secretary Markk Perete, a spokesman for the Justice Department, said the task force will also consider the findings and the Senate’s conclusion.
“He has closely followed the process in both houses of Congress and has taken note of the issues discussed in both legislative investigations,” said Perete.
He revealed that there are also some witnesses who are being examined before being summoned by the working group.
“As previously reported, the task force also created composite teams that, among others, will validate witness statements and claims and examine PhilHealth records. Liability findings [whether administrative, civil or criminal] and the beginning of any action will be done only once the composite teams finish their work, ”Perete pointed out.
