A three-year-old girl has survived being lifted 30 meters into the air by a kite during a festival in Taiwan.
Horrified onlookers screamed as the girl was helplessly catapulted and spun high above them after strong winds caused the long-tailed giant orange kite to wrap around her waist in the coastal town of Nanliao, near the city of Hsinchu.
Video footage posted on social media Sunday showed the girl soaring into the air for about 30 seconds as a crowd of festival goers gathered to throw her back to the ground for safety.
The girl, identified only by the surname Lin, was scared but only suffered minor scratches on her face and neck, according to local news reports.
They took her to the hospital and sent her home shortly after.
The fourth edition of the kite festival was interrupted after the incident and Lin Chih-chien, mayor of Hsinchu City, apologized on social media.
“We will review the reasons to avoid repeat accidents and take responsibility,” he wrote on Facebook.
The kite the boy had tangled in was supposed to carry candy that would be scattered from the sky for the children to catch, according to Taiwan News.
The organizers said the children generally keep their distance until the kite is in the air, but an unexpected gust of wind washed over them.
