MANILA, Philippines – COVID-19 Front-line doctors evicted from their apartments and dormitories by their owners can apply to the government for accommodation, President Rodrigo Duterte said on Monday.
The president said those on the front lines can directly contact Secretary Carlito Gálvez Jr., the top executor of the National Task Force on COVID-19, to be provided with a place to stay close to their workplace.
“All health workers evicted from their homes – [whether] you are renting a room or a house or whatever, because you are a COVID leader, they are evicting you out of unfounded fear that you may spread to the owners. If this happens, you can call Secretary Galvez’s office directly and we will provide the necessary accommodation, ”Duterte said, speaking in part in Filipino, in his recorded speech.
“We will even provide him with food and choose the place closest to where he is working,” he added.
Meanwhile, Duterte cautioned that he would warn homeowners not to evict those on the front lines.
“Just tell me the name of the owner of the building, the owner of the pension, and I will call your attention publicly so that if they get sick they won’t be admitted to any hospital. Maybe that’s better, an eye for an eye. Well, I’m kidding anyway, ”he said.
