The UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) will continue to enjoy some form of pardon when school authorities present on Tuesday the result of their internal investigation into the alleged violation of the protocols of their men’s basketball team in Sorsogon.
“There is no decision tomorrow [Tuesday] as UST will only present the results of its internal investigations, ”said the Chairman of the Board of Games and Amusement, Abraham Kahlil Mitra on Monday.
The GAB, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Department of Health (DOH), as well as the Higher Education Commission and the Philippine University Athletic Association, are investigating UST head coach Aldin Ayo, and the Growling Tigers who allegedly held an unauthorized player training in the town of Sorsogon with strict sporting protocols that still apply.
Ayo has been reserved and referred to the UST investigation as his platform to air his side. But at least two Tigers, CJ Cansino and Brent Paraiso, took to social media to hint that the team did indeed have clandestine training in Sorsogon’s hometown of Ayo.
The Interagency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases tasked the joint GAB-PSC-DOH committee with managing health protocols related to sports and physical activities during the Covid-19 pandemic.
After analyzing the UST report, the joint committee will make its recommendation to the IATF, although the body has previously declared a sanction – if proven guilty of UST – by the team’s mother league, UAAP, which it would be enough for a punishment.
The UAAP is said to be seeking a sanction similar to the all-season suspension and that it covered De La Salle for fielding two ineligible players in men’s basketball.
The CHED, according to its president Prospero de Vera III, said the commission would also sanction UST “if the school had full knowledge of the [trip]. “
“We should await your investigation. We should know who authorized it, ”de Vera said.
