KRISTINA Knott took silver and eclipsed a long-standing Philippine record in the women’s 100-meter race after a landslide performance at the Drake Blue Oval Showcase in Iowa.
Knott, a double gold medalist at the last Southeast Asian Games in Manila, finished second behind Kayla White (11.18 seconds), while setting a new national mark of 11.27 seconds.
Her time eclipsed the 33-year record of 11.28 seconds set by legendary Lydia De Vega when she won 100-meter gold during the 1987 SEA Games in Jakarta.
The 24-year-old Knott wasn’t even born yet when de Vega made his record-winning performance.
The Philippine Athletics Association (Patafa) confirmed the new record set by Knott, who also holds the SEA Games record in the 200 meters with a time of 23.01 to win the event in 2019.
Tracker Fil-Am also won gold in the 4×100-meter mixed relay and silver medalists in the 100-meter and 4×100-meter relay, respectively.
The Olympic standard at 100 meters is 11.15 seconds.
Reigning Olympic long jump queen Tianna Bartoletta logged 11.44 seconds to take bronze in the event, a non-Olympic qualification.
Knott is looking to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in the 200-meter event and will need a qualifying time of 22.80 seconds.
