MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Human Rights (HRC) called on the government to heed the recommendations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on “fidelity to human rights standards” following the recent killings of two human rights defenders. human rights in the country.

In a previous statement, the United Nations Human Rights Office encouraged the government to undertake an “independent, comprehensive and transparent” investigation into the murders of peasant leader Randall “Randy” Echanis in Novaliches, Quezon City and of the human rights defender Zara Alvarez in Bacolod.

“The CHR notes that an investigation is underway into the recent killings. Social justice and human rights are the primary duty of the State. We hope that the government will demonstrate its fidelity to human rights standards by being receptive to the recommendations of independent human rights bodies and organizations, ”said HRC spokeswoman Jacqueline de Guia in a statement on Saturday.

The commission also hopes that the government will heed the repeated call to take concrete steps to find justice in the killings of human rights activists.

Palace previously denied that it ordered the police force to prohibit the release of data on killings of CDH activists.
