MANILA, Philippines – Senate President Vicente Sotto III mourned on Friday the death of former Senator Tessie Aquino-Oreta.
“My family and I are very sad about his death. She was very close to me and Sec Greg, “Sotto said in a message to reporters, referring to former Senator and now Secretary of the Department of Information and Communication (DICT) Gregorio” Gringo “Honasan.
Sotto added that his wife, veteran actress Helen Gamboa, was “devastated” by Aquino-Oreta’s death.
“Helen, being a relative of yours is devastated by her passing. She hasn’t stopped crying since they told us the news last night, ”she said.
Aquino-Oreta passed away Thursday night at the age of 75.
The late senator was behind the Early Childhood Care and Development Act, the Single Parent Act, the Solid Waste Management Act, the Philippine Micronutrient Fortification Program, the Clean Air Act, the Commerce Act Electronic, Philippine High School System Act, Basic Education Government Act and Philippine Landscape Architecture Act.
He also chaired the Senate Education Committee from 1998 to 2004.
Before being elected to the upper house, Aquino-Oreta served as a legislator in the House of Representatives for three consecutive terms, from 1987 to 1998, representing the Malabon-Navotas district.
She also became the first woman to serve as Assistant Majority Floor Leader in the history of the Lower House.
Aquino-Oreta studied Literature and history at the Convento de la Asunción and received her International Studies degree in Ducal City, Ávila, Spain.
He became a Lieutenant Colonel (Reserve) in the Philippine Air Force after earning a Master’s Degree in National Security Administration from the Philippine College of National Defense.
