MANILA, Philippines – The Pasay City local government has relaxed its liquor ban policy amidst Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) due to “economic reasons.”
The mayor of the city of Pasay, Emi Calixto-Rubiano, signed Ordinance No. 6107 that would allow residents to buy alcoholic beverages despite the closure on condition that they only do so between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and consume it inside their homes.
Under Ordinance No. 6107, the copy of which was released Thursday, the local government recognized that retailers and small businesses in the city of Pasay must be helped to increase their sales during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also recognized that residents of the city of Pasay should not be deprived of their choice to buy and consume alcoholic beverages “to help them deal with their anxieties.”
However, the local government reminded the public that physical distancing must still be strictly observed during their home drinking session. The liquor companies were also instructed to deliver alcoholic beverages to supermarkets and stores only from 8 a.m. at 6 p.m.
“In no case will drinking be allowed beyond the home’s facilities, including the backyards, and nowhere will it be allowed,” underlined the city ordinance.
While many local government units imposed a liquor ban during the ECQ, the Department of Commerce and Industry previously clarified that the Inter-Agency Task Force on Infectious Disease Management did not approve such a ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages.
