MANILA – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Thursday that it has resumed construction of several major bridge projects aimed at easing traffic in Metro Manila.
These projects are: Bonifacio Global City-Ortigas Center Link, Puente Estrella-Pantaleón, Puente Binondo-Intramuros and Sta. Monica-Lawton Bridge, the agency said in a statement published on its Facebook page.
DPWH Undersecretary Emil Sadain said they resumed civil works on these iconic bridge projects after obtaining the green light from the government agency tasked with controlling the spread of COVID-19.
The Bonifacio Global City-Ortigas Center Link is 51 percent complete, DPWH said. Upon completion, this project is expected to reduce travel time between the two shopping malls to just 12 minutes from the current 1 hour.
The BGC-Ortigas Link has 2 parts: the Sta. Monica-Lawton Bridge, which will cross the Pasig River and connect Lawton Avenue in Makati and Santa Monica Street in Pasig; and Lawton Avenue – Global City Viaduct, which will cross Lawton Avenue to the BGC entrance. DPWH expects to complete the Sta. Monica-Lawton Bridge in December of this year.
The project started in July 2017 and was originally expected to end in March this year.
Meanwhile, the Star-Pantheon Bridge, also known as the Rockwell Bridge, connecting the cities of Makati and Mandaluyong, is 54% complete, the DPWH said.
Construction of the bridge began in September 2018, but work was suspended until January 2019 due to heavy traffic expected in the area in the months leading up to the Christmas season. The bridge is expected to be completed after 30 months, or mid-2021.
The DPWH said the Binondo-Intramuros bridge is 32 percent complete. The project, which will connect two of Manila’s historic districts, started in July 2018 and is expected to finish after two and a half years or the end of 2021.
Public Works Secretary Mark Villar previously said they also hope to complete the Skyway Stage 3 and Harbor Link highways this year, despite COVID-19 disruptions to construction activities.
Economic managers have said that spending on infrastructure will play a key role in bringing the economy back to life, which fell for the first time since 1998.
