Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 13) – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) summoned the Deputy Administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Mocha Uson, for sharing misleading information on social media.
“Yes, our Cyber Crimes Division is investigating her for false news,” said NBI spokesman Ferdinand Lavin. “We included her in the investigation [on] EPP publication. “
Uson posted photos on its Facebook page last month showing a new set of personal protective equipment allegedly purchased by the government. But netizens noted that one of the photos he used was from the SM Foundation.
The image was replaced minutes later.
The Bayanihan We Heal As One Act, which grants additional powers to President Rodrigo Duterte, also states that anyone who spreads false information about the crisis will face a sentence of two months in jail or a fine of ₱ 10,000 to ₱ 1 million.
This is not the first time that Uson, a blogger and vocal supporter of the Duterte administration, has been called in for a misleading social media post.
In 2017, she was criticized for sharing on her blog page a post with a caption asking for prayers for Filipino soldiers. However, it turned out that the soldiers in the photo were not Filipinos, but she defended herself saying it was “symbolism”.
