MANILA, Philippines – Mayors joined the Catholic Church to “consecrate” their cities to the Virgin Mary on Wednesday, May 13, the feast of the appearance of the Lady to 3 shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917.

This is part of the National Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary organized by the Philippine Conference of Catholic Bishops (CBCP) on Wednesday.

“Consecration” is a religious term that means doing something sacred.

At the Manila Cathedral, the mayors of 5 cities in the Archdiocese of Manila attended a live broadcast mass led by Bishop Broderick Pabillo, the temporary head of the local church.

Local officials present were the Mayor of Manila, Isko Moreno, the Mayor of Makati, Abby Binay, the Mayor of Pasay, Emi Calixto Rubiano, the Mayor of San Juan, Francis Zamora, and the Mayor of Mandaluyong, Carmelita Abalos. Towards the end of the mass, the mayors took turns reciting a prayer of consecration to the Virgin Mary and offering flowers before the image of the Lady of Fatima.

“In this moment of pandemic, we face our powerlessness. That is why we are consecrating ourselves to Mama Mary. In our weakness and confusion, we are not alone, ”said Pabillo in Filipino during his homily.

Earlier on Wednesday, a live mass was also broadcast from the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in the city of Valenzuela as part of the Day of Consecration.

“This is the way in which our country implores the grace and mercy of the Lord to end the coronavirus pandemic and seek the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the healing and recovery of all those infected, and for the strength and Protection of leaders and our fellow citizens, ”said the Archbishop of Davao, Rómulo Valles, president of the CBCP.
