CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Cebu provincial government is now looking for an area in Talisay City to use as a temporary terminal for south Cebu-bound passenger buses that can start operating again next week.
With the anticipated transition from Cebu province to general community quarantine (GCQ) this Saturday, May 16, 2020, Governor Gwendolyn García said that some mass transit vehicles, including buses, may now take to the streets again subject to certain rules.
But while the buses may already be able to operate, Garcia argues that they should not be allowed into the city of Cebu, as the latter will remain under modified enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) until May 31.
Garcia previously said that even if the province would already move to GCQ, the Capitol will still not relax its border controls for Cebu City considering the number of cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in its capital.
Ang Dakbayan sa Sugbo, ECQ pa man gihapon. Busa, the bus route to Dili na mo-cross ug dili mahimo from the anhi terminal in Cebu city. Magpadayon gihapon ang atong strikto kaayo nga border controls. Mao na nga mangita ta og place didto sa dakbayan sa Talisay, ”said Garcia.
(Cebu City will continue to be under ECQ. For this reason, buses will still not be able to cross the city and occupy the existing terminal located in the city.)
The governor said he was already in talks with Talisay city mayor Gerald Anthony Gullas about the need to find an area that can be used as an alternative terminal for buses in southern Cebu.
Currently, the South Cebu Bus Terminal (CSBT) along Natalio Bacalso Avenue in Cebu City is being used as the “Bagsakan Center” or delivery point for catches and fresh products from Different cities of Cebu and other neighboring provinces that will be sold in the public markets here.
In the case of buses to the north of Cebu, García said there is less concern since the Northern Bus Terminal (NBT) is located in Barangay Subangdaku, in the city of Mandaue.
Malacañang announced on Tuesday, May 12 that the Central Visayas, with the exception of Cebu City, will already be placed under GCQ as of May 16.
But the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu, however, issued a joint statement asking the IATF to allow them to remain under the modified ECQ with Cebu City, as the tri-cities are currently conducting rapid tests for COVID-19 based on antibodies. / dcb
