MANILA – Tropical Depression Ambo has intensified into a tropical storm and is expected to bring rain to parts of Visayas and Mindanao, state meteorological office PAGASA said Tuesday.

The country’s first storm this year will bring moderate scattered light at times with heavy rains over Mindanao and Eastern Visayas in the next 24 hours, PAGASA said at 11 p.m. advisory.

Both were last seen 455 kilometers east northeast of the city of Surigao, with maximum winds of 65 km per hour and gusts of 80 km / h.

It is moving north at 20 km / h.

Tropical cyclone wind signal No. 1 could rise over portions of eastern Samar and eastern northern Samar in the next 6 to 12 hours.

The storm could intensify further as it approaches the Visayas-Bicol Oriental area.

Both pounced on the Philippines as efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic continued. Metro Manila has been closed, and most companies have closed since March 16.

The quarantine measure expanded to all of Luzon and was extended twice, with Metro Manila and 2 other areas to switch to a modified blockade until the end of the month as the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) expires on Friday.

About 20 major storms in one year hit the Philippines, the closest largest land mass facing the Pacific typhoon belt.
