The Department of Health (DOH) in Visayas Central recorded the death of a one-year-old baby from Cebu City on Monday that tested positive for the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
According to DOH Region 7 director Jaime Bernadas, they are still verifying the exact address of the boy’s family.
The baby was taken to the hospital for vomiting and diarrhea and was later found to have acute gastroenteritis. The boy died hours later and a swab sample was taken.
“We are not sure if it is a concomitant infection, but COVID-19 has not been associated with any gastrointestinal disease,” Bernadas said.
The boy was also intubated, but doctors found no significant findings within his lungs.
An autopsy was not performed in the hospital. “We also cannot determine whether it was COVID-19 or acute gastroenteritis that caused the death,” Bernadas said.
The health staff visited the parents and all those who were in close contact with the child for a swab test.
The case is the youngest death so far in Central Visayas. The region has recorded 26 deaths due to COVID-19.
The total number of COVID-19 cases in the region has reached 1,789, with Cebu City the highest at 1,571.
Officials have attributed the increase in cases to widespread contact tracing and mass evidence.
