(CNN) – There was a surge of coronavirus cases over the weekend in some of the world’s nations where home stay measures and other restrictions were lifted, said the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO ), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, during a press conference in Geneva on Monday.
“Over the weekend we saw signs of the challenges that may arise. In the Republic of Korea, bars and clubs were closed because a confirmed case led to the search for many contacts,” said Tedros.
“In Wuhan, China, the first group of cases was identified since his blockade was lifted,” Tedros said. “Germany has also reported an increase in cases since the restrictions were reduced. Fortunately, all three countries have systems to detect and respond to a resurgence of cases.”
Tedros added that the WHO has published guidelines and six criteria for countries to consider before lifting the blockade measures.
“The WHO is working closely with governments to ensure that key public health measures are maintained to meet the challenge of lifting the blockades,” said Tedros. “Until there is a vaccine, the comprehensive package of measures is our most effective set of tools to tackle.”
