Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 11) – The Philippines now has more than 11,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus disease, the Health Department confirmed Monday.
DOH registered 292 new infections, bringing the country’s total number to 11,086.
More than half of the new cases were registered in the National Capital Region, and 162 more people contracted the virus. This is followed by Central Visayas which registered 74, while 56 more have been registered in other regions across the country.
The Health department also recorded 75 new recoveries, bringing the number of those who have survived the viral disease to 1,999.
Seven more died, with the death toll at 726, the agency added.
According to DOH, the majority of COVID-19 patients exhibit mild symptoms, and the average length of hospital stay for recovered patients is 15 days.
Previously, Health spokeswoman María Rosario Vergeire explained that the reports, including the number of new cases, are not real-time data, since all information must be validated before reporting.
Health officials have also attributed the increase in cases to expanded tests for coronavirus. There are now a total of 26 licensed laboratories across the country that can perform COVID-19 testing, after DOH recently certified the José B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital and Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center. As of Friday, authorities said the country can perform up to 12,000 COVID-19 tests per day.
The department continues to remind the public not to be complacent by adhering to health protocols and exercising preventive measures such as proper hygiene, physical distance, and cough etiquette as the world moves into a “new normal” environment. .
Globally, more than 4.1 million people have been infected with the viral disease so far. Of this number, more than 280,000 resulted in death, while more than 1.4 million patients have already recovered.
