LEGAZPI CITY The Department of Health (DOH) in Bicol reported on Saturday that two other health workers have contracted the coronavirus.

A 48-year-old nurse from the city of Daraga, who was labeled Bicol # 58, and a 27-year-old male public health service worker from Ligao City, who was labeled Bicol # 59, have tested positive for SARS-CoV -2, which causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The two new patients bring the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Bicol to 59, of which 19 are health workers.

According to DOH, both patients have been exposed to other patients with COVID-19.

Both patients showed no symptoms at the time of writing, but both were swabbed as the region conducts specific tests, in which healthcare workers who have been exposed to confirmed cases take precedence.

“The health workers that have been evaluated are from the COVID-19 areas as a requirement for them,” Kenn Brian Pérez, health education and promotion officer at the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH) told Inquirer ).

He said tests were done to verify the status of health workers before they leave their duties for quarantine.

He said those that were evaluated were recommended by infectious disease specialists and based on the risk of their exposure.

“They are asymptomatic but (the tests) depend on the level of risk of exposure,” he said.
