The peace of Cebu was shattered when the first case of 2019 coronavirus disease (Covid-19) was reported on the island on March 18, 2020.
The Visayas Central Health Department (DOH 7) said that a 65-year-old man was confined at Chong Hua Mandaue Hospital in Mandaue City.
However, the announcement was not entirely unexpected.
Cebu is home to Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the second busiest airport in the country. So it was only a matter of time before the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that had originated in China’s Wuhan city in December 2019, hit the province’s shores.
In early March, the virus had already spread to more than 100 countries after all. And on March 7, local transmission of the disease was confirmed in Metro Manila.
Seven weeks since the first case was reported, the number of cases in Cebu has exceeded 1,600, despite the blockades, called Enhanced Community Quarantine or ECQ, declared in Cebu City since March 28, in the city of Lapu-Lapu since March 29, and the rest of the province of Cebu since March 30.
Residents had endured the restrictive blocks believing that within two weeks, the period that the World Health Organization said was the Covid-19 incubation period (the time between infection and the onset of symptoms), all sick people would be revealed and then sent. to hospitals for treatment, and the quarantine would be lifted a month after the declaration.
But six weeks after the shutdown, aided by the ability to conduct mass testing, the cases have only skyrocketed, reaching new and even remote areas, prompting frustrated residents to yell: How did the virus get there?
It is a question that SunStar Cebu hopes to answer with a list of the first patients reported in each new area in Cebu, which does not mean that these patients have caused subsequent infections in these areas.
