Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 9) – In May, the country’s heat index reached many of its highest values for the year so far, data from the country’s state climate office revealed.
The heat index provides the “apparent” temperature felt by the human body, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA. High air temperature and relative humidity lead to a high index value.
The agency had listed the top five heat index values for 2020 so far. Four values were recorded in May, while the highest value was recorded in April. They are as follows:
– City of San José, Occidental Mindoro; 58 degrees Celsius; April 20th
– Butuan City, Agusan del Norte; 53 degrees centigrade; May 6th
– Ambulong, Bangas, 51 degrees Celsius; May 6th
– Sangley Point, Cavite, 51 degrees Celsius; May 6th
– Dagupan City, Pangasinan, 51 degrees Celsius; May 5th
PAGASA said that heat index values between 41 and 54 degrees Celsius are likely to cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion, which could lead to heat stroke with continued activity. Meanwhile, a heat index of over 54 degrees means that heat stroke is imminent.
According to the Department of Health, signs of heat stroke include hot, reddened skin, fainting, dizziness, weakness, headache, very high fever of 41 degrees Celsius, rapid heartbeat, seizures, and unconsciousness.
Among the tips PAGASA has provided to stay comfortable during hot weather is to stay indoors as much as possible, wear light-colored and light-colored clothing, and avoid physical activities at noon and in the afternoon, which is when temperatures are at their best. highest point.
It’s also important to drink plenty of water on a regular basis, as the body needs it to stay cool, the agency added.
Water interruptions
However, this may seem difficult to do consistently this month for some, with certain areas occasionally experiencing interruptions in the water supply this time.
Manila Water announced on Facebook on Saturday that parts of the city of Antipolo and the province of Rizal will experience low pressure or lack of water due to maintenance activity.
The same day, Maynilad published notices saying that the city of Las Piñas, the city of Parañaque, and the cities of Imus and Bacoor in Cavite could also experience this, with the emergency slowdown of the company’s Putatan 2 water treatment plant. .
Manila Water serves the Metro East Zone as well as select cities in Rizal province, while Maynilad supplies Metro Manila West Zone and certain cities and towns in Cavite.
The hot summer weather could last until the third or fourth week of May, according to PAGASA.
