MANILA, Philippines – Another 220 people in the country contracted the new coronavirus disease, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Sunday. This raised the total count to 4,648.

The DOH also said that COVID-19 has now killed 297 people in the country, as it recorded 50 more deaths, even when 40 more people were able to recover from the disease, increasing the number of recoveries to 197 as of Sunday.

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus, or SARS-CoV-2, whose outbreak began in the Chinese city of Wuhan in Hubei province in late 2019.

For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that disappear within two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more serious illnesses, such as pneumonia and death.

Globally, the virus has already infected more than 1,783,720 people and killed more than 108,900 as of April 12. On the other hand, more than 404,860 people have so far recovered from the disease.

The World Health Organization has declared that COVID-19 is a pandemic.
