CEBU CITY, Philippines – A densely populated site or sub-village in the upper part of Cebu City is under closure as of Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020.

Cebu city government officials have confirmed to Cebu Daily News Digital that the two new cases of 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) reported in the city are from Sitio Zapatera, Barangay Luz.

City Councilman Dave Tumulak, in a text message, said barangay officials in Luz decided to restrict access and movement at Sitio Zapatera to contain and curb the spread of the virus that had infected 25 people in the city by April 11, 2020.

As a result, law enforcement officials have cordoned off the area to bar anyone from entering and to ensure that its residents remain inside their homes.

City Health Officer Dr. Daisy Villa, in a separate telephone interview, confirmed that the city’s two new COVID patients – 19 – a 59-year-old woman and a 67-year-old adult man – were the contacts from a previously confirmed case there. .

Villa said both patients were asymptomatic and remained in “strict” isolation at home as of April 12, 2020.

“One of the new patients turned out to be the best friend of the previous confirmed case (in Barangay Luz). We also decided to take samples from his partner (considering the degree of exposure), ”said Villa in Cebuano.

She said they immediately recommended a confinement at Sitio Zapatera considering the density of the people who live there, which would pose a risk.

On Saturday April 11, 2020, the Department of Health in Visayas Central (DOH – 7) announced two new COVID-19 cases for Cebu City.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the city to 25, with five deaths and 11 recoveries.

Barangay Luz has a population of over 18,000 according to the 2015 census of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Sitio Zapatera is within walking distance of some of the city’s main business districts.

In addition to Barangay Luz, confirmed cases were also reported in Cebu City at Barangays Banilad, Calamba, Camputhaw, Capitol-Site, Cogon-Ramos, Guadalupe, Kinasang-an, Sta. Cruz and Talamban as of April 11, 2020./ dbs
