Manila, Philippines – Fitness centers will not reopen in areas to be placed under General Community Quarantine (GCQ), the Department of Health (DOH) said.

In a virtual press on Sunday, DOH Undersecretary María Rosario Vergeire said they had not yet recommended to the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID) the reopening of gyms and other fitness centers in locations that may be downgraded to GCQ.

“Wala pong rekomendasyon the DOH in the gym and gyms,” he said, adding that his reminder to the public of being physically active in the midst of the enhanced community quarantine means that they must exercise within their homes every day.

“Forcibly removing the exercise of magic to resist resistance, the man knowing everything I need,” she said.

“Marami trains exercise or exercise to earn money in tahanan,” he added.

Some people have been eager to get outside and exercise outdoors since they have been locked inside their homes for more than a month.

Luzon Island has been under enhanced community quarantine since mid-March to combat the spread of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

It was initially scheduled to end on April 13, but was extended until April 30.

Last week, President Rodrigo Duterte announced that Metro Manila and other areas with a high number of COVID-19 cases will be under extended community quarantine until May 15.

Malacañang previously said that the ECQ extension is still subject to further verification and can still be reviewed before April 30.

Other areas with moderate or low risk of the virus will undergo a reevaluation as to whether they will undergo GCQ.

Under the GCQ, certain areas in the labor sector may reopen in phases. Shopping centers that cover non-leisure stores may also open. Priority and essential construction projects can also be resumed.

Non-workers will be allowed to go out to buy goods and take advantage of services, except those related to sector IV or leisure.

Public transportation will be allowed to operate at reduced capacity, and local government units are mandated to enforce the nightly night curfew for non-workers.

For the option to switch to GCQ in areas of moderate to low risk, the task force recommended opening 100 percent to the agricultural sector, including fishing, forestry and food manufacturing, as well as the entire supply chain that involves the packaging of raw materials, food sales, supermarkets and restaurants.

It was also recommended that fifty to 100 percent of the manufacturing sector be opened, such as those engaged in electronics and exports, e-commerce and the delivery of essential and non-essential items, repair and maintenance services, housing and office.

The IATF also considered up to 50 percent on-site work and 50 percent work from home for GCQ areas with moderate to low risk. These include financial services, business process outsourcing (BPO), other non-leisure related wholesale and retail trade, other non-leisure related services.

Also under this condition, people of 20 years or younger, as well as seniors with high health risk, are recommended to stay home. – RRD (with details from correspondent Asher Cadapan Jr.)
