Seven other universities in the Philippines, four of them based in Mindanao, were named among the 650 best schools in Asia, in addition to the seven already on the list since last year, according to the 2021 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS ) released Thursday. .
The seven new schools were Davao Athenaeum University (support 501-550), Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (551-600), Adamson University (601+), Central Luzon State University (601+) ), Central University of Mindanao (601+), Central Philippine University (601+), and Xavier University (601+).
The University of the Philippines remained the top-ranked school in the country, climbing to 69th from 72nd in 2020.
It was followed by the Ateneo de Manila University in position 135, below 124; La Salle University, 166 of 156; University of Santo Tomas, 186 of 179; and Universidad de San Carlos, section 451-500, below section 351-400.
Also on the list were Mapua University and Siliman University in the 501-550 group, down from their previous ranking of 451-500.
The Higher Education Commission (CHEd) attributed the ranking improvement to their efforts to “help the Philippines [higher educational institutions, or HEIs] go international by helping them understand the international classification system. “
He added that the internationalization initiatives of the schools were promoted through university-to-university twinning programs and research, study visits by university rectors and scholarships in the best foreign universities.
“Since 2016, many Philippine HEIs have gained greater exposure and visibility by attending international educational fairs and conferences, mobilizing student and faculty exchanges, and creating strategic partnerships and ties that have contributed to the fulfillment of this wonderful achievement,” said CHEd President , Prospero de Vera. I said in a statement.
Despite the decline in the ranking of some of the universities, De Vera said that the inclusion of seven more schools on the list was “good news to show that our efforts to provide access to quality education are paying off.”
“The internationalization of Philippine HEIs has been a key strategy of the Duterte administration to improve the quality of education so that we can produce world-class graduates,” he said.
However, the upgrade in the UP ranking came after President Duterte threatened to withdraw funding from the country’s main state university for allegedly recruiting students to become communist rebels during a public speech.
The QS ranks schools in Asia based on 11 key indicators, including academic reputation (30 percent), employer reputation (20 percent), teacher-to-student ratio (10 percent), and international research network (10 percent).
The indicators for the Asian rankings are weighted higher than those for the global rankings, and the QS says the changes were based on consultations with regional experts and stakeholders to determine key priorities for universities in the region.
The National University of Singapore remained in the first place in Asia for the third consecutive year.
