It is expected that next week the decision will be made to form a coaching staff that will be in charge of the basketball program at the University of Santo Tomas. The sources said officials at the university’s Athletic and Physical Education Institute will have to make a decision quickly to rebuild its basketball program. Six coaches are applying for the position of UST head coach and sent their resumes to the new IPEA director, Fr. Ermito de Sagon. Among the six coaches, who applied is Chris Gavina, the first non-alumnus to seek the position left by Aldin Ayo. He has joined the ranks of alumni, which include Siot Tanquingcen, Estong Ballesteros, Chris Cantonjos, Gilbert Lao, and Ed Cordero. Gavina is known for leading Kia to the 2016 PBA Governor’s Cup playoffs. Also featured will be former UST captain Jeric Fortuna, who has expressed his intention to join the Growling Tigers staff as an assistant coach.

He was joined by Kim Lo, a teammate from 2010 to 2012. Ayo was suspended by the league this week for conducting training activities at Sorsogon without receiving the proper signal from the concerned authorities. Since presenting the UST report last week, Ayo had already resigned, along with assistant coaches McJour Luib and Jinino Manansala. Since the controversy around UST began, five players have left the team. The director of the university’s Institute of Physical Education and Athletics, Jannel Novino Abogado, OP, resigned and was immediately replaced by Father Ermito de Sagon. 6-foot-two forward Ferdinand Asunción Jr. was the last to leave and it is said that he joined the Mapua Cardinals.
