Manila: A 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook the Philippines on Friday, the US Geological Survey said, Residents of the capital Manila reported that buildings shook and the Christmas Day masses were disrupted, but there was no damage reports.
The earthquake struck Batangas province, on the main island of Luzon, at a depth of 114 kilometers (70 miles) at 7:43 am local time (2343 GMT), according to the USGS.
The agency initially said that the force of the quake was 6.2 and 108 kilometers deep.
In the coastal city of Calatagan, about 90 kilometers south of Manila and near the epicenter, people who attended the mass remained calm when the earthquake struck, Police Chief Major Carlo Caceres told AFP.
“There was a pause in the church service, but people did not panic,” Cáceres said.
“This area is prone to earthquakes and people are more or less used to them.”
There were no reports of damage or casualties in the area, it added.
“The furniture and office equipment swayed, but nothing broke,” said police officer Allan Megano in the nearby city of Balayan.
The Philippines is situated in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from Japan to Southeast Asia and the Pacific basin.
