MANILA, Philippines – A 6.1 magnitude earthquake, followed by a weaker one within minutes of each other, struck Surigao Del Sur on Monday morning.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the earthquake struck 66 kilometers northeast of the city of Bayabas at 6:13 am.
It had a depth of focus of 77 km.
The tremor was felt with instrumental intensity I in the city of Surigao and the city of Gingoog, according to Phivolcs.
Aftershocks are expected from this stronger earthquake.
A few minutes later, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck 93 km northeast of the city of Bayabas at 6:21 a.m.
It had a depth of focus of 8 km.
Phivolcs said the second earthquake is a replica of the strongest earthquake previously recorded in the province.
