MANILA, Philippines – Thirty-four of 136 hospitals in the National Capital Region (NCR) were placed below the “danger” level in terms of bed capacity solely for patients with the novel coronavirus disease, data from the Department of Health (DOH).

The category of “danger” means that the beds for COVID-19 patients in these hospitals have an occupancy of more than 70 percent and are vulnerable to being full in the event of an increase in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in their respective areas.

Of these 34 hospitals, 13 have already reached 100 percent bed occupancy, according to DOH. These hospitals include A. Zarate Hospital, Allied Care Experts (Ace) Medical Center Valenzuela Inc., Asian Hospital, Bernardino General Hospital I, Mary Chiles General Hospital Inc., National Center for Mental Health, Rosario Maclang Bautista Hospital, Taguig- Pateros District Hospital, Santo Tomas University Hospital, Valenzuela City Emergency Hospital and Victoriano Luna Medical Center.

The latest DOH figure is four hospitals less than the Sept. 16 data for Metro Manila hospitals placed below the “danger” level. But the Sept. 16 statistics included only 130 NCR hospitals.

This screenshot from ncovtracker.doh.gov.ph shows the Department of Health coronavirus tracker data as of September 23, 2020 on the COVID-19 bed capacity across all Metro Manila hospitals.

INQUIRER.net analyzed the most recent data – dated September 23, 2020 available on DOH COVID-19 tracker for bed capacity. The data points to indicate how well prepared COVID-19 hospitals are to deal with a possible spate of COVID-19 infections. But only hospitals in Metro Manila that have beds assigned exclusively for COVID-19 patients were included in this story.

Additionally, DOH data shows that the bed capacity of Metro Manila hospitals is at the “warning” level, with 54.4 percent of the 6,555 beds for COVID-19 patients in the region being occupied. .

A “warning” level means that these hospitals have a utilization rate of 30 to 70 percent.

In contrast, hospitals are considered “safe” if bed occupancy is less than 30 percent.
