MANILA, Philippines – Thirty-three of 136 hospitals in the National Capital Region (NCR) were labeled as being at the ‘danger’ level in terms of bed capacity solely for treating patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19 ), figures from the Department of Health (DOH) showed.
This number is lower in a hospital compared to the data recorded last Wednesday, September 23.
For the entire NCR, total bed capacity remained at the “warning” level with 52.1 percent of the 6,626 COVID-19 beds now occupied.
Compared to the Sept. 23 data, total bed occupancy in the NCR was also at the “warning level” with 54.4 percent of the 6,555 COVID-19 beds in use now.
The health department said bed capacity data indicates a hospital’s readiness to respond to an increase in coronavirus infections in their respective areas.
A hospital is “safe” from the rise of COVID-19 if there is a utilization rate of less than 30 percent for its COVID-19 beds.
A hospital is at a “warning” level when there is a utilization rate of 30 to 70 percent.
Meanwhile, hospitals with more than 70 percent bed occupancy are in “danger” of being full in the event of a surge.
As of October 1, a total of 314,079 respiratory disease infections were reported. This includes 254,223 recoveries and 5,562 deaths.
Because of this, the Philippines now ranks as the 20th country with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world, according to the John Hopkins University virus tracker in the United States.
INQUIRER.net compiled the most recent data available on DOH’s COVID-19 tracker for bed capacity which is dated September 30. Only hospitals in Metro Manila that have beds assigned only for patients with coronavirus disease were included in this story.
This story only cited data on the occupancy of dedicated COVID-19 beds, but not the total number of beds within hospitals.
