Three patients who recovered from COVID-19 donated their blood plasma to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in hopes of helping other infected patients.
In a Facebook post, PGH identified donors as Ceasar Ian Frias seafarers and nurses Roselle Gale Arranz and Erika Joy Soriano.
Covid-19 survivors doing their actions! Heroes evidently emerge during the crisis! On behalf of PGH and all Filipinos! Thank you very much for your brave move! PGH said in a Facebook post on Friday.
Maraming salamat sa inyong kabayanihan (Thank you for your heroism!)! You are truly the people who give hope, “he added.
PGH spokesman Jonas Del Rosario said the three “brave and healthy” survivors of COVID-19 donated their blood for plasma therapy Thursday, coinciding with the country’s Day of Valor.
“On April 9, 2020 (Araw ng Kagitingan), the first 3 brave and healthy Filipino survivors of Covid-19 generously donated their blood for convalescent plasma therapy vs. Covid-19 to the Philippine General Hospital,” he wrote in a post. From Facebook.
Del Rosario praised the donors and said that “they overcame the stigma and showed the world that their plasma is a gift of life.”
Previously, PGH said that the blood of recovered patients contains antibodies that could help fight the disease.
The hospital recently began serving as a COVID-19 referral center, at the request of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.
As of the date of publication, a vaccine or cure for COVID-19 has not yet been discovered.
On Friday, the Health Department announced that there are now 4,195 cases of COVID-19 in the country with 221 deaths and 140 recovered patients.
PGH is still looking for more COVID-19 survivors who are willing to donate their blood plasma. Those who wish to donate can reach the hospital at 155-200.
