2 volcanic earthquakes shake Mayon volcano; Alert level 1 remains: Phivolcs

MANILA – Two volcanic earthquakes were recorded during the 24-hour observation period at Mayon volcano, the state seismic office reported Thursday.

At 8 a.m., the Phivolcs Mayon Volcano Bulletin said the moderate emission of steam-laden white plumes slid east.

Phivolcs said sulfur dioxide emission was last measured below the baseline average at 436 tonnes / day on October 29, 2020.

He said electronic tilt data also showed non-constant inflation from late 2019 to mid-2020, followed by short-term deflation of average slopes from July 2020.

“Overall, the Mayon Building is still inflated relative to benchmarks,” he said.

The Mayon volcano is still in an abnormal condition, Phivolcs said, categorizing it at Alert Level 1.

The public is advised to refrain from entering the permanent 6 kilometer radius danger zone due to the dangers of rockfalls, landslides, sudden ash bursts, and groundwater or steam-driven eruptions from the summit.

Active stream or river channels and areas identified as prone to lahar should be avoided, especially during extreme weather conditions.

Heavy rains and high winds from the recent attack by Super Typhoon Rolly in the Bicol region triggered a flow of lahar that buried houses in thick mud in Guinobatan, Albay.
