ZAMBOANGA CITY – A soldier and a suspected gunman from Abu Sayyaf were killed in a 30-minute standoff in the town of Sulu in Patikul on Saturday, the military said.
Major General Corleto Vinluan Jr., head of the Western Mindanao Command, said the confrontation occurred around 9:55 am in the village of Kabbon-Takas while troops from the 9th Scout Ranger Company were in combat operation.
Vinluan added that government troops encountered about 30 gunmen believed to be led by Radullan Sahiron and Mundi Sawadjaan.
After the shooting, the soldiers recovered a body, identified as one Samir Sanni, while two fighters from Abu Sayyaf were captured.
Seven soldiers were also injured in the confrontation.
In a press release issued by the Sulu Joint Task Force, he said the operation was aimed at searching for and destroying Abu Sayyaf after the twin attack on August 24 in the city of Jolo that left 17 people dead and more than 70 injured.
“We will use all military resources to destroy the fleeing Abu Sayyaf members who are the perpetrators of the Jolo bombing,” said Brigadier General William Gonzales, commander of Joint Task Force Sulu.
Gonzales thanked the mayor of Patikul, Kabir Hayudini, for leading the Aug. 27 declaration of Abu Sayyaf as ‘persona non grata’ or not welcome in his city.
