MANILA – Police arrested 18 people, including 3 students from the University of the Philippines, for allegedly organizing a Labor Day rally in Central Barangay, Quezon City on Friday afternoon.
The suspects are detained at Camp Karingal and will face complaints for violating Republic Law 11469 or Bayanihan to heal as a single law, which prohibits mass gathering, police said.
While still trying to determine all the facts about the incident, the Quezon city government said preliminary information showed that the suspects were detained for staging a demonstration, violating improved community quarantine guidelines.
“The City will closely monitor the situation to ensure that the rights of those involved are respected, while continuing to fulfill its duty to protect its people by enforcing existing quarantine guidelines,” the local government said in a statement.
“Again we remind everyone to stay home and stay safe.”
However, Tinig ng Plaridel, the official student publication of UP College of Mass Communication, said the group was running a feeding program for residents of Central Barangay.
Those arrested are 2 university students from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy and a graduate student from the Faculty of Sciences, he said.
The departments where the students belonged are asking for their release, saying they were only doing volunteer work.
The Philippine National Student Union also condemned the incident.
“Do not miss the angels and the words of the pandemic, but I will take you to the city and you can enjoy!” He said. – With a report by Arra Perez, ABS-CBN News
