Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 26) – Of the 634 universities that rank among the best in Asia, 14 are from the Philippines, according to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) university rankings released on Wednesday.

This is the nation’s “best performance and representation” in QS, according to the Higher Education Commission. In last year’s list for Asia, only seven universities in the country were included.

The University of the Philippines still ranks first among 14 Philippine institutions, after climbing to 69th, three notches up from the previous year.

It is followed by the Ateneo de Manila University in 135th place; De La Salle University at 166; and the University of Santo Tomas at 186th. All three slipped down the rankings from their places last year.

The University of San Carlos also fell to the 451-550 group, previously 351-400.

The 501-550 group is joined by the Ateneo de Davao University, which was not included last year; University of Mapua; and Silliman University. Meanwhile, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology was in the 551-600 group.

Finally, among the more than 600 top universities are Adamson University, Central Luzon State University, Central Mindanao University, Central Philippines University, and Xavier University, which were also not part of the previous rankings.

CHED President Prospero De Vera III attributed this positive development to the “internationalization of Philippine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs),” which he said has been a key strategy of the current government.

“The recognition given to the additional HEIs among the best in Asia is good news to show that our efforts to provide access to quality education are paying off,” said De Vera.

He added that CHED has continually assisted HEIs through various international programs and is hopeful that such initiatives will further advance the nation’s higher education sector and “cultivate world-class Philippine universities.”
