TUGUEGARAO CITY –– The bravery and heroism of at least 127 government soldiers, mostly soldiers, who were part of rescue operations in the flood-affected province of Cagayán were recognized here Sunday.
Rescue personnel received medals with bronze crosses and relief and rehabilitation operations ribbons, which were presented by the governor of Cagayan, Manuel Mamba, in a ceremony held at the airport in the city of Tuguegarao.
The Northern Luzon Command (Nolcom) of the Philippine Armed Forces said government security forces were the first to respond during widespread flooding in the Cagayan Valley on Nov. 14. They helped evacuate and rescue 2,485 families or 9,869 people.
“His important and active role in humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations during the massive floods has saved many lives. We will always be grateful for your heroic deeds… ”Mamba told the troops.
Lieutenant General Arnulfo Burgos Jr., commander of Nolcom, expressed his gratitude to the leaders of Cagayán “for recognizing the sacrifices and courage of our soldiers who will continue to fulfill their duty to protect the welfare of our people.”
Subsequently, Burgos led soldiers in distributing relief items, such as food, water, and medical and school supplies to the areas affected by the floods.
In addition to honorees from the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, prominent local police officers, members of the Coast Guard and members of Fire Protection were also recognized during the occasion.
