BEIJING – A fishing boat, registered in Quanzhou, eastern China’s Fujian province, sank in waters near Pingtan Island in the Taiwan Strait early Sunday, according to the province’s maritime safety authority.
The accident took place shortly after 4 in the morning.
By 10 am, 12 of the 14 people on board had disappeared and two were saved.
The rescue operation is still ongoing. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Previous reports claimed that the ship collided with another ship before sinking.
