MANILA, Philippines – The Senate swiftly passed ten franchise bills in the third and final reading involving telecommunications, transmission, power and racetrack companies.
During Monday’s plenary session, the chamber approved franchise bids for the following:
• Cruz Telephone Company, Inc.
It operates a telecommunications system under Manila East Holding Corporation and JS Cruz Construction and Development Inc. The franchise expired on March 29, 2020, seeking the renewal of a 25-year franchise.
• Tandag Electric and Telephone Company, Inc.
It operates a public domestic telecommunications service. The franchise expires on July 16, 2023, seeking the renewal of a 25-year franchise.
• Bayan Telecommunications, Inc.
It operates telecommunications, radio telephones, broadcasting and national retransmissions under the same company name and the Globe Telecom Inc. franchise expires on August 9, 2021, seeking the renewal of a 25-year franchise.
• FBS radio network
It operates radio and television broadcasts. The franchise expired on July 9, 2020, seeking the renewal of a 25-year franchise.
• Century Communications Marketing Center Inc.
It operates radio and television broadcasts. The franchise expired on July 16, 2020, seeking the renewal of a 25-year franchise.
• Cáceres Broadcasting Corporation
It operates radio and television broadcasts. The franchise expired on July 9, 2020, seeking the renewal of a 25-year franchise.
• Philippine Collective Media Corporation
Expansion to digital television. The franchise expires on November 14, 2034, seeking the renewal of a 25-year franchise.
• Negros Broadcasting and Publishing Corporation
It operates radio and television broadcasts. The franchise expired on September 23, 2020, seeking the renewal of a 25-year franchise.
• Davao light and energy company
It operates electrical systems for light, heat and power. The franchise expires on September 7, 2025, seeking the renewal of a 25-year franchise.
• Metro Manila Turf Club Inc.
It operates a hippodrome for horse racing. The franchise expired on April 22, 2020, seeking a 35-year-old franchise.
Meanwhile, senators will also approve in second reading the franchise offer from San Miguel Aerocity Inc., which seeks to build an airport in Bulacán. [ac]
