TOKYO – A woman was killed and 5 others injured on Monday when a taxi driven by a 73-year-old man struck a group of pedestrians at a pedestrian crossing in Tokyo, police said.

The taxi ran over the 6 people on a busy street in the capital’s Shibuya district around 7 pm when the driver, Heiji Aizawa, failed to stop at a traffic light, police said.

The taxi passenger told police that Aizawa appeared to have suffered from a health problem.

Yuko Sato, 49, died in the accident. Of the 5 people, a woman in her 40s and her 9-year-old son were seriously injured. Aizawa was also taken to the hospital.

The taxi stopped about 100 meters from the crash site after colliding with a divider in the center of the road, police said, adding that they will question the driver about the accident after he recovers.
