PGA DFS Core Plays: 3M open

Memorial Tournament Review

Last week was a nice change of pace from the birdie parties we’ve seen since the restart. It was one of the few weeks that having 6 out of 6 in their lineup was not a guarantee to collect because there were some golfers who really lost fantasy points on Sunday. Congratulations to Jon Rahm on winning his fifth PGA Tour event and jump to first place in the Official World Golf Ranking. I didn’t love the penalty they put on him after the round as it seemed to be in bad taste. Tony Finau did the exact same thing on Saturday and they never came back and added the penalty. Dedicated golf fans like us will not see Rahm in a different light, but once the word cheat comes out, it stays on the minds of many for a long time.

For the second week in a row, I was saved by a good weekend lineup. I really thought my entire tournament lineups had a chance, but Paul Casey was an eight in a par three after being 30 feet from the pin was the story of my week. If he had made a seven, he could have made the cut and then played the weekend in the easiest conditions (we saw Xander Schauffele make the cut at number and finish 13). He also had a lineup that was live in Milly Maker, but the fantasy gods had different plans on Sunday. For the week, five of the seven central plays made the cut. While that is an improvement from the previous weeks (TRENDS!), we are still looking for a week off DFS. Fortunately, we had another solid week of betting, which we’ll cover later.

3M Open Preview

This week we are headed to Minnesota for the 3M Open. If you weren’t a fan of the stacked field and difficult course last week, you’ll be excited for Thursday to arrive. There are many similarities between this event and the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Both events were added to the calendar last year, both are bomber tracks, and both are birdie extravaganzas. If you are looking for a competition course as we only have a year of history here a good place to start is the Detroit Golf Club. Looking at this week’s course, TPC Twin Cities is a Par 71 that spans over 7,400 yards. It has wide fairways and bentgrass greens.

Looking at last year’s data, the fairways and greens were easy to reach. The average driving distance was far higher than the average of the course, so golfers should hit a lot of drivers this week. When looking at the data obtained from the strokes, the focus was the most important, followed by the placement and then from the tee. This was one of the few events last year in which the green game did not have a big impact and that makes sense as golfers hit about 75% of the greens. I am looking for elite ball strikers who will be given plenty of birdie opportunities this week. I will also put more emphasis on putting, specifically on the bentgrass greens.
