Since the Wear OS segment lacks any real innovation thanks to a near monopoly on Fossil-branded hardware, it’s great to see new players enter the space. Oppo’s first Wear OS device, the Oppo Watch is now officially going global today with a familiar design but an interesting take on Google’s portable operating system.
The smartwatch has already had a release only in China, but it comes with an “Android-based” operating system. Obviously, that is not the case now that Oppo Watch is launching in Western markets. Along with some Oppo-exclusive features and functions, we’ll also get Google’s standard Wear operating system, which includes Google Fit, Google Pay, Google Assistant, and all the apps you know and love on the Play Store.
Oppo’s first Wear OS smartwatch will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset, but it also comes with an Ambiq Micro Apollo3 coprocessor that will help with long life and longevity. The smartwatch only comes with one storage and RAM configuration, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage available, regardless of the model chosen.
However, the Oppo watch comes in two-size configurations. There is a 41mm model that includes a 1.6-inch square AMOLED screen with a resolution of 320×360 pixels at 301ppi. The battery measures 300 mAh, which should last around 24 hours of “normal” use, but it can last up to 14 days when power save mode is activated.
For those who want the “true” Wear OS experience with the new Oppo Watch, the 46mm model could be more attractive. The largest model includes LTE connectivity, a 1.9-inch 402 × 476 pixel AMOLED screen at 326ppi plus has a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits. The battery is also slightly larger at 430 mAh and should run for 30 hours when in “smart mode” or up to 21 days when power save mode is on.
One of the main advantages of both smartwatches is the compatibility with SuperVOOC flash charging technology, which will make Oppo Watch replenish within 75 minutes from 0% when using the included magnetic pin charging brick .
Both smartwatches look very familiar to the Apple Watch and come with aluminum alloy frames, though only the 46mm model comes with a ceramic backplate. Removable straps are also available, with leather, silicone and rubber options said to be available on launch day.
You’ll be able to choose the Oppo 41mm Black, Pink, Gold or Silver Watch for £ 229 starting September 3rd. While the Oppo watch with 46mm Wear OS will be available in either black or gold priced at £ 369 in the UK. While we are confident that US consumers will be particularly interested, Oppo currently stated that “there are no plans for a launch in the United States.”
