Oculus Quest 2 Leaker shows off new lenses, hints ’15 Sep ‘

Earlier this week, prolific Twitter tech leaker WalkingCat shared a picture of what appears to be a new Oculus Quest. Today, WalkingCat shared a rear angle of the headset, titled ’15 Sep 🧐 ‘.

It’s unclear if the September 15 suggestion is for an reveal, a specific release date, or something else entirely.

The first new Facebook lens since going?

Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift S, and Oculus Go use the same lens. Officially named ‘Super Libra G’, it was first shipped on Go (now discontinued) in May 2018.

Super Libra G was announced in late 2017 and was first shipped in Q2 2018

The distance between people’s eyes (called meinterPupillary reistance or IPD) varies, and this is important in providing you with a visually comfortable virtual reality experience. If the center of the VR lens is too far from the eye, the user may see a blurred image where static objects do not appear completely solid.

The current Oculus Quest has a lens separation adjustment slider, which allows you to position the lenses to align them with the center of your eyes.

As we noted with the previous leak, this new headset doesn’t seem to have a lens separation adjustment slider. Facebook told us that Rift S lenses are “best for users with 61.5 and 65.5mm IPDs,” which equates to only 46% of men and 43% of women in the largest publicly available IPD dataset.

New leaked search lenses vs Oculus search lens

However, the characteristic of a lens that determines this (when adjustment is not possible) is the eye box. A smaller eyebox is less forgiving of your eye position, while a wide eyebox means you don’t have to think as much about the position of the lens.

Lenses on the run today don’t appear to be the same as previous Super Libra G lenses. It’s hard to tell, of course, given the image available, but if the lenses on this new headset increase the size of the eye case, it’s possible that a larger range of IPDs can see a clear image. This is speculation on our part until we receive more information.

The lenses also seem to extend beyond Quest’s. This could indicate a wider field of view, but again it is impossible to determine precisely from an image.

Integrated audio

A horizontal groove can be seen inside the side strap. It’s in exactly the same place as the audio ports on Oculus Quest and Oculus Go, so it’s safe to assume this is a new version of the integrated audio technology.

In Quest & Go, it works by channeling the audio from an internal speaker on each side through small “tubes” so that spatial audio is obtained without headphones.

Quest’s volume and bass were improved over Go, so there could be more audio enhancements to this new earphone.

Mounting evidence throughout the year

A new Oculus Quest would not be a complete surprise: evidence has been accumulating throughout the year.

In March, the official Oculus developer website leaked the code name of a separate headset ‘Del Mar’ with an early access developer program. A reference to the ‘Oculus Jedi Controller For Oculus Del Mar’ was also discovered in the Oculus Mobile SDK.

In April, Gerald McAlister of RGB Schemes found a driver for the ‘Jedi’ driver within the latest firmware for the Consumer Quest. We analyzed the controller and compared it to the current touch controller, finding that it may refer to a new controller with the same input scheme, but potentially improving finger tracking, haptics, and detection.

In May, Bloomberg reported that Facebook was working on a new Quest that could be 20% lighter and physically 15% smaller, with a refresh rate of 90Hz. The report also suggested that the new headset would use cheaper materials and slightly improved drivers.

The leaked images appear to be in accordance with the Bloomberg reports.

Finally, last week, the Japanese publication Nikkei reported that a new Oculus headset went into production this month, with production targets of 2 million units.

As with all leaks, take this image with a large grain of salt. Even if it is real, it may not reflect the current state of the product. We will be watching Facebook in the coming weeks and months to provide you with official information. we can find.
