Edward “Eddie” Van Halen was a Dutch-American guitarist, songwriter, and record producer.

He is best known for the hard rock band Van Halen, which he co-founded with his brother Alex Van Halen, Mark Stone, and David Lee Roth in 1972.

Died of cancer

Eddie Van Halen has had cancer for many years, but continued to work with music despite his illness.

– Cancer can be a very special and “private” disease, which can be difficult to treat. But now I want to tell you what is happening, he said in 2001.

He died at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica on Tuesday.

– He was the best father I could wish for, writes his son Wolfgang Van Halen on Twitter.

One of the biggest

In 2011, Van Halen was ranked number eight on the Rolling Stones’ 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list. In 2012, he was also named number one in Guitar Worlds magazine’s readership ranking of the 100 greatest guitarists in history.

The Van Halen band had many successes. Among them are “Saltar”, “Panama” and “Correr con el diablo”.

He was also the guitarist behind Michael Jackson’s energetic solo on “Beat it.”

The New York Times writes Tuesday that Eddie Van Halen was one of the most influential guitarists of his generation. The newspaper describes the band as one of the most popular rock bands of all time.

Van Halen has sold more than 75 million records and is with him on the list of the 20 best-selling artists in history. The band was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

– He was everyone’s guitar hero. No one between Jimi (Hendrix, editor’s note) and Eddi. TNT guitarist Ronni Le Tekrø writes this in an SMS to NRK.

Kiss bassist Gene Simmons also praises Van Halen in a post on Twitter.
