It was named Sputnik after the world’s first satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Now, one of the vaccine’s makers says that mass vaccination could begin late next month.

– Now there are five manufacturers that are in the process of producing the Sputnik vaccine, so we are talking about a large number. Thus, mass vaccination can begin at the end of November and in December, says the director of the R-Farm company to the Interfax news agency.

More evidence remains

But the authorities approved Sputnik before testing began in phase three.

It is now underway and 40,000 people in the Moscow area are participating in this trial.

The purpose is to find out if the vaccine is effective in protecting against the coronavirus.

In phases one and two, Sputnik was tested on animals and a small number of people to find out if it is safe to use.

Before long, Russian authorities promise to provide preliminary data on the phase three vaccine trial.

Russia has been criticized internationally for approving the vaccine before it has been tested.

Health workers, teachers and the military are among the vulnerable groups who received Sputnik before it was finally tested.

A third vaccine is also at an early stage in Russia, but may be approved before the end of the year.

There is a lot of prestige associated with Russian vaccines. For President Vladimir Putin, it was clearly important to be able to say that Russia was the first in the world to register a vaccine.

This happened despite the fact that projects in other countries had made significant progress in testing their coronary vaccines.

Russia has already signed agreements with several countries for the production of Sputnik, although it is not yet clear how effective the Russian vaccine is.

The trend is similar to what is happening in many other countries in Europe. Globally, Russia ranks fourth among those most affected by the crown, after the United States, India and Brazil.

Russian authorities say it is still not relevant to close the country as it was done in the spring. The explanation is that it will do too much damage to the economy.

More local and specific measures are now being introduced in Russia.
