– It is clear that we have seen an increase in the number of flights from Poland. The largest proportion has been in recent weeks, says lead researcher Umaer Naseer of FHI to NRK.

In response to questions from NRK, FHI has provided an overview of the aircraft arrivals where they have traced the infection.

Since the start of the pandemic, the infection has been detected in 88 aircraft in Poland. More than half of aviation infections have been detected in the last three weeks.

– There is an increasing proportion of people infected in Poland or who have a native country of Poland. It is well related to the fact that there are several flights from Poland that have been infected on board, says Naseer.

According to the FHI weekly report, 178 people with a country of birth in Poland were reported infected last week. This means that just over one in ten people infected in Norway last week was Polish.

The FHI infection team gives municipalities the names of fellow travelers who have sat in the two closest seats of people who tested positive.

These passengers are then quarantined by the municipal doctor where they live. Infection quarantine is stricter than inbound quarantine because you cannot get an exception through testing.

Many are not tested

At Torp airport, only about 30% of passengers check in on arrival. The tests are voluntary.

At least 50 travelers from Poland tested positive at Norwegian airports last week, but municipal doctor Ole Henrik Augestad fears large dark numbers:

– There will be more of those that are not tested, which are also positive. Everyone receives information about the quarantine rules. So we hope the consequences of not proving themselves are not so great, Augestad told NRK earlier this week.

Poland is currently experiencing explosive growth, registering 16,300 infected and 130 dead on Tuesday, according to Worldometer.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health says they are aware of the entry-related outbreaks.

– Do you have the impression if the passengers follow the Norwegian infection control regulations?

– The municipal doctors are the ones who follow up. The contact we have is to track which flights are involved and to get in touch with the municipalities in which they are located.

– Many come on Friday

William Holden of the Arbeidskraft Valdres recruiting company estimates that they currently have between 50 and 60 workers from Poland. They mostly work in the Oslo area. The company supplies personnel to companies in the construction sector.

When NRK calls, it is busy sending more workers into quarantine after an infection was discovered at a construction site in Oslo. Several of the workers have shared kitchens.

– We called and found everyone who has been in the dining room. All are quarantined, Holden says.

He stresses that the company takes infection control very seriously and is now working to ensure that all workers have a private room.

Holden also says that many have received new quarantine requirements that go into effect on Saturday, and are now struggling not to be affected.

– Some come on Friday from Poland. Many threw themselves around. We don’t have work for them at the moment. The situation is very strange, says Holden.

He believes the new quarantine rules will have consequences for Poles who often work in Norway.

– In practice, this means that traveling from Poland is irrelevant. Those who are here stay instead of going home. Maybe a few more will arrive before Saturday night. After that, the flap goes down.
