Burger chain Max is investing heavily in veggie burgers, but is outdone by nutrition researcher Helene Dahl of the University of Bergen in a new trial.
The result appears in a test that Nettavisen has carried out between regular hamburgers and comparable vegetarian varieties at the three hamburger chains McDonalds, Burger King and Max.
Max’s veggie burger contains five times more saturated fat than the meat variant. In total, there are also 100 kilocalories more in the veggie burger (955 kcal) than in the meat variant (852 kcal).
– In this duel, I would say that the original burger wins, considering a lower energy content and a marginally higher fiber content, but mostly due to the lower content of saturated fat, says Dahl.
There is little difference between the meat and vegetarian options at Burger King and McDonalds.
The choice between vegetarian or meat is still not just about nutrition, says Dahl.
– It is also worth mentioning that from a sustainability perspective, we should also choose less meat and more vegetarian. From this perspective, perhaps you should choose the vegetarian variant when in doubt or when it looks quite similar.
