This is how they helped at the Poor House

On Tuesday, Dagbladet wrote about the extremely long lines for Poor House, at the Greenland camp in Oslo.

– We can’t look at this. We act immediately, says manager of public relations and communications Calle Hägg at Rema 1000, when Dagbladet makes contact.

– I’ve never seen anything like it

Filmmaker and Oslo citizen Nadina Helen Bakos posted a video on Facebook this week, showing large numbers of people waiting for a hot meal.

Bakos lives right next to Poor House, which is an organization for the poor. She announces that she has never seen anything like this before.

NOT ENOUGH FOOD: We are working very hard at Fattighuset in Oslo towards the last opening day before Easter, on Wednesday. More than 500 people are expected outside its facilities in Greenland, and many of those present have to leave without dinner.

– Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday there is a queue at the nursing home for people to collect food, and the queue there is now, I have never seen before. I think it’s absolutely terrible that there are so many people who need help, says Bakos in the video.

You want to contribute

Several Rema 1000 stores collaborate with Fattighuset as usual, but after seeing the images on Dagbladet, they have mobilized.

– As a result of the precarious situation, we have endeavored to encourage all our stores in Oslo to contribute more to the important work of helping those most in need in the city this Easter, says Hägg Street.

This means that stores are encouraged to contact Poor House.

– And we have encouraged the Poor House to contact us. We are acting immediately and now we are intensifying our work towards the House of the Poor, says Hägg.

He insists that it is a complex situation, because the activity of the store is already in full swing before the Easter holidays.

The nursing home says they have a lot of bread and sweets, but little food to distribute. Therefore, they are in great need of dinner items.

– This is the most effective way to act, in the situation in which we find ourselves. In order to help you quickly enough, we believe this is the best solution to do so.

– What kind of goods can you deliver?

– We give away goods that we have too much of, goods that we see that we can get rid of, but now we want to further strengthen the work. It’s a very demanding time, says Hägg.

The Asylum: – Got more food

Poor House press contact Sverre Rusten tells Dagbladet that on Tuesday afternoon they received several new inquiries from people wanting to help.

– There are several who have contacted us today, and people have asked for VIP numbers and we have already received food at the door, says Rusten.

Rusten says that Fattighuset usually has agreements with several individual stores in Oslo, from which they collect food several times a week.

– We have fixed agreements with stores and often there are individual situations where we are contacted by stores or companies that want to provide food, he says.

– Hardly an immediate consequence

Wednesday March 31 will be the last day before Easter where the House of the Poor will be open before it closes for holidays.

Rusten previously told Dagbladet that they expect long lines on Wednesday and that there are several hungry people who therefore have to wait a week before they can return to the Greenland camp premises for a free meal.

But despite many inquiries to the organization on Tuesday, Rusten is not sure it will have any effect on Wednesday’s food distribution.

– Today we received some food at the door, which has an immediate consequence. But many of those who have called and said they want to settle will probably not have time to deliver their contributions tomorrow. But of course it is very positive that many have contacted us and we have received more than 30 inquiries today. The common denominator was that they wanted to help us in different ways, says Rusten.

The poorhouse makes every effort to provide food for everyone who shows up for lunch on Wednesdays and Fridays. The Poor House usually distributes clothes, helps with counseling and is a social offering. But in recent months, they have had to give up food distribution.

Rusten had previously estimated that around 500 people will visit the House of the Poor on Wednesday for a hot meal, but he’s not sure if they will have enough food to feed everyone who shows up.

– Everything is uncertain. Also how many are coming, concludes Rusten.
