Tourists are still unable to stay in hotels or rent vacation homes in Germany, so a vacation abroad seems to be the only option for Germans to get away for a while.
And they have seized that opportunity.
Mallorca and the Balearic Islands have ceased to be classified in the last week as a high risk area for coronary heart disease. This has led a large number of Germans to book holiday trips to the island.
“It’s very, very, very exciting and fantastic to be able to fly again, even if it’s just for a week,” tourist Bettina told Reuters.
The newly arrived tourists that the news agency journalists encountered at the airport this weekend came from many different German cities, including Berlin, Dusseldorf and Hamburg. All had to present test results that were no more than 72 hours old when they arrived at the airport.
– It is a fantastic opportunity to be able to come here despite the coronavirus, says student Linda Tlucker (23).
He has traveled from Berlin and plans to spend two weeks in Mallorca.
Ask people not to travel
Earlier this week, the authorities removed Mallorca and some other Spanish regions, as well as Portugal and Denmark, from the list of areas where the risk of coronary heart disease is high.
This means that you are allowed to travel there without having to be quarantined or tested for COVID-19 upon returning to Germany. The decision meant that the low-cost company Eurowings had 300 extra routes to Mallorca during the Easter holidays.
At the same time, the German government has tried all week to get people to refrain from traveling abroad, after it became clear that many Germans saw the removal of the quarantine obligation as an invitation to travel to the Spanish island.
– We encourage everyone to refrain from all travel that is not absolutely necessary, said government spokesman Steffen Seibert earlier this week.
– Lack of advice not to travel is not the same as an invitation to travel, said spokeswoman Maria Adebahr of the country’s Foreign Ministry.
Spaniards must stay home
The whole paradox is that, while Germans are not allowed to be tourists in their own country, Spaniards are not allowed to be tourists in Mallorca either.
The Spanish government has introduced a travel ban between regions of the country until after Easter.
– It’s probably not that fair. But if the region says it’s okay for us to come here, then the citizens can’t do much about it, says Tlucker.
