Chelsea advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League after beating Spanish league leaders Atlético de Madrid.
The blue jerseys had it all in their own hands after winning the first match 1-0. The task for the Spaniards was made even more difficult when Chelsea also took the lead ten minutes before the break.
The goal was taken from Diego Simeone’s textbook. At this point, it was obvious that Timisoara’s players slowed down and became more defensively oriented.
A red card and another goal from Chelsea just before the end made it impossible.
– I see Chelsea as a clear outsider this season. It’s impressive what Tuchel has accomplished with them, says TV 2 soccer expert Erik Huseklepp after the game.
Chelsea have been unbeatable since Thomas Tuchel took over the club. The victory against Atlético ensures that they have already played 13 games in a row without losing. The match was also Edouard Mendy’s sixth in a row without conceding a goal.
On Friday the quarterfinals and semifinals will be drawn. You can of course watch this on TV 2 platforms starting at 12 noon.
He punished Atlético for what he does best
Tuchel had to do without three of the best-performing players under his command. Mason Mount and Jorginho had to remain standing during the match due to quarantine, while Andreas Christensen had to report due to illness.
On two occasions Atlético requested a penalty in the first half, but it was the blue jerseys that were going to take the lead.
The Spanish have become known for their counterattack with Diego Simeone. That is why it was a shocked Atlético coach who saw Chelsea punish them with the weapon for which Atlético has become known.
Kai Havertz was about to pass another goal to Timo Werner when he launched a free kick over the defensive wall and almost into the net, but the visiting goalkeeper arrived just in time to deflect it. Hakim Ziyech, however, had a terrible day. Werner saw it and jingled the ball in front of the goal. The Moroccan thus got the honor of putting an end to a brilliant counterattack.
– This makes Timo Werner absolutely excellent. You can’t get a better pass than that, was the verdict of TV 2 soccer expert Erik Huseklepp.
He will arrest Haaland in two weeks: on Wednesday he saw red
There was going to be more drama at Stamford Bridge.
Frustration increased with the Atlético players and ten minutes before the end it overflowed for Stefan Savić. The Montenegrin shoved his elbow into Antonio Rüdiger’s chest and was rewarded with a direct red card.
– Completely desperate for Savić, concluded TV 2 commentator Jonas Bariås.
TV 2 soccer expert Erik Huseklepp fully agreed with the referee’s decision.
– It seems correct, but I’m surprised you see it so quickly There are many who get in his way, but he sees it pretty quickly, says Huseklepp.
Just before the end, Emerson prodded the match. At this point, it was obvious that the Atlético players slowed down and became more defensive.
Thus, the Thomas Tuchel series continues without losses. After the German took over the management of the club, Chelsea have not lost in 13 games. The 1-0 victory over Atlético de Madrid was also Edouard Mendy’s sixth straight game without conceding a goal.
On Friday the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be drawn at 12.00. Of course, you can watch the broadcast on tv2.no/sport and Sumo.
