Many hundreds of Swedes gathered on Saturday afternoon at Medborgarplatsen in Stockholm to demonstrate against the crown’s measures in the capital, Aftonbladet reports.
At 2:45 p.m., Expressen reports fighting and fierce resistance at the rally.
Soon after, “chaotic conditions” broke out, according to the newspaper.
– Hate mood
– There are many hundreds of people gathered, they give speeches and people cheer. They have also thanked the police for allowing the demonstration to continue, reported the Aftonbladet reporter at the scene when the demonstration had just started at 2 o’clock.
Less than an hour later, the situation has changed.
The police had announced in advance that they would break up the demonstration if many people attended, as it is prohibited by the Pandemil Law.
– If we expel people, we tell them that they must leave the area, and if we choose to remove them, we put them on a smaller bus and take them to a place where it is a bit difficult for them to return. That work is ongoing now, says Mats Eriksson in Police Expressen.
The Crown restrictions in Stockholm state that in reality there should be no more than eight people gathered in the same place. This is the reason why the police are now breaking up the demonstration.
Expressen reports that chaotic scenes are now unfolding as police try to remove several of the protesters and that the atmosphere has turned “obnoxious.”
According to the newspaper, the police have built a human wall to detain the protesters, but the protesters have now broken it down.
– It has become an extremely disturbing atmosphere, reports the Expressen photographer on the ground.
– Enough of restrictions
The Frihet Sverige group is behind the demonstrations. Those present believe that there are too strict crown restrictions in the capital.
– There are so many people in Sweden who have had enough of these restrictions, which are really unfounded, and want to step foot and show that we no longer agree with this, organizer Filip Sjöström tells Expressen.
Earlier this afternoon, there were, among other things, several families with children among the protesters and they are said to have sung the national anthem, Expressen reports.
